Obituary

Mrs. Thelma J. Brunson 79 of Dillon died on Thursday, July 22, 2010 at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Brunson will be conducted on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. from the Hazy Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Hamer, S.C. Mrs. Thelma Jane Brunson was the daughter of the last John Henry and Mamie Armstrong. She was born on July 16, 1931 in Dillon, South Carolina and departed this life unexpectedly on Thursday, July 22, 2010 at her home in Dillon, S.C. Thelma graduated high school from Mathers Academy in Camden, South Carolina. She then graduated from Barbara Scotia College in Concord, North Carolina. Thelma earned a Masters degree in special education from Coppin State College where she also received her Doctorate Equivalent. Thelma taught special education for thirty-four years; one year in South Carolina and 33 years in Baltimore City Public Schools. She celebrated her retirement on September 18, 1998. Soon there after she opened her own Child Care Development Center which was operated until apporximately 2007. Thelma was a member of Mt. Pleasant Ministries Church in Baltimore, Maryland, and Hazy Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Hamer, South Carolina where she served faithfully until her passisng. Left to cherish loving memories are her husband of 53 years, John Henry Brunson, and six children Sarah Frances Daniels of Little Rock, Arkansas, Edward (Linda Harris) Brunson of Fayetteville, North Carolina, John A. Brunson (Leslie) of Baltimore ,Maryland, Garrett L. Brunson (Leverne) of Baltimore, Maryland, Stephen I. Brunson of Baltimore, Maryland, and Yvette Shanel Brunson-Hightower (Lloyd) of Murrieta, California; two sisters Ruth Rice of Brooklyn, New York, and Mary Elizabeth Drummond of Delaware; two brothers Douglas McAuthor "Mack" Armstrong and Elder David "Nick" (Elaine) Armstrong. Twelve grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Final resting place for Mrs. Brunson will be in the Rest Haven Cemetery in Dillon, S.C. The family will receive friends at 1620 Hardy Street in Dillon.
