Mary Emma Bethea was born in Marion County on August 17, 1924. Daughter of the late Wesley and Lillie Bethea. She transitioned peacefully October 4, 2017 at home surrounded by family. Mary Emma spent all of her life in Dillon, South Carolina where she was a member of Bowling Green United Methodist Church. She later joined St. Stephens United Methodist Church. Mary was a faithful member, attending church every Sunday. She sang in the choir, served as the secretary and held many other roles within her church. She moved to Illinois with her nephew Daniel Wesley Bethea Jr. and family in 2012.

Mary was a school teacher for over forty five years. Mary had a passion for children, education and community. Over the years, she has contributed so that many young women could attend college. She provided notary services to her community. She has sat on many boards within her church and community, to improve the life of others. She received numerous awards and recognition for her work within the church and community. She was also a member of the Eastern Star in Dillon, South Carolina.

Mary was preceded in death by both of her parents and all eleven of her siblings. She leaves to cherish her memory many nieces, nephews, caretakers and friends.
