The Obituary

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.", Revelation 21:4(KJV)

James Arthur Alford ("Candy"), son of the late Johnnie and Ruby McEachern Alford was born October 1, 1935 in Hamer, South Carolina. During the early morning hours of the day, "Candy" departed this life on October 22, 2019 at his home. He attended the public schools of Dillon County until he moved to Baltimore, Maryland. After moving to Baltimore, he continued his education and became a welder at Koper Steel. After retirement, he moved back to Dillon County where he enjoyed leisure activities and Dillon High School football games.

While in Maryland, he continued to grow his Christian experience at Gillis Memorial Church.  There, he worked on various church committees however, ushering was his passion. After moving home, Candy continued his life's work by lending a "helping hand" to others at his home church (St. Matthew A.M.E.)  and throughout his community. "Candy" was a faithful member of the church and attended church routinely. At St. Matthew, he served on the Trustee Board and Finance Committee. Even as his health began to decline, he continued to attend church faithfully.

James was united in marriage to his wife Annie Eula Clark (1936-2005) on September 30, 1962. He loved her greatly and attended to her until her passing. James was preceded in death by his father, Johnnie Alford, his mother, Ruby McEachern Alford, three brothers, John Charles (JC) Alford, Michael O'Neal Alford, John Edward Alford and one sister, Ruby "Sippi" Louise Alford Stanley. He leaves to cherish fond and loving memories of him to Rosie Alford McCoy

(Bennettsville, SC), one brother-in-law, Mr. J.P. Nelson (Clio, SC) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. from St. Matthew African Methodist Episcopal Church in Hamer, South Carolina. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
