Obituary

Carlon James (C.J.)Whittington was born August 20, 1938 in Dillon, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents Madge and Roosevelt and a sister Rosetta Fletcher. Carlon received his education in Dillon County School System. At an early age he confessed Christ at Hazy Grove Baptist Church, in Hamer, South Carolina under the leadership of Reverend James Hall. In th early 1970s, Carlon relocated to the Bronx, New York to seek employment. He worked for Interstate Trucking Company for 25 years. In 1985, Carlon relocated to Hempstead, New York. He began working for Strahl & Pitsch as a pesculator in North Babylon, New York where he retired in December 2003. C.J. was well liked by many people. He was humble, loving and a good man. He would not do or say anything to hurt anyone's feelings. In 1991 Carlon and Recella united in holy matrimony. He attended South Hempstead Baptist Church along with his wife, Recella where he later joined. In 1993 he was ordained as a Deacon and served as chairman of the Deacon Board for four years.He was also a member of the Male Chorus, Gospel Chorus and Choir Advisor until he relocated. In February 2005 Carlon and his wife relocated to Lumberton, North Carolina. He joined Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church and served as a Deacon until his health failed. He loved serving the Lord; good praying, good singing and good presching. Carlon is survived by his loving wife, Recella; seven (7)children: Elaine (Jerry)McKinsey of New Jersey, Patrick of Dillon, SC, Amand of Jacksonville, FLa., Courtney (Samuel) Jennengs of the Bronx, New York, Leonardo (Dawn) McNeil of Mahattan, New York, Lisa (Christopher) Grafton of Hempstead, New York. Eleven (11) grandchildren; mother-in-law Louise Watson of Hempstead, New York, one sister-in-law Cora Townsend of Dillon, SC; five (5) sisters-in-law and four(4) brothers-in-law, Betty Thompson of Hempstead, New York, Lou Esther, Carrina Watson of Hempstead, New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a dear friend whom he adopted as a true brother, Deacon Wallace Gray.
